If you meet 26-year-old James Fleming your first impression would be, “this guy is hilarious”. But the Wayne State University grad student is more than just a funny man, he is the brains behind the Humble Minds Hungry Hearts brand. Badgal RiRi CFDA: Tasteless or Nah?

Rihanna has to be thee most versatile  celebrity of our time when it comes to fashion. No matter the hairstyle or outfit she completely slays it.  She is not afraid to try anything new or push the limits. If Rihanna wears it  please believe that almost every young girl, even some celebrities, are going to try the look out.

It was no surprise that the singer was honored with the 2014 Fashion Icon Award at the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Fashion Awards.   The star wore a completely sheer gown made of over 200,000 swarovski crystals with a matching head-wrap and gloves.  The ensemble gave us a 1920’s Flapper girl feel. But was her outfit a bit much at the award show? Was it tasteless?

CFDA Award Show

The star is no stranger to showing her nipples and rump but never has she done both on a red carpet.  As a huge Rihanna fan I was completely taken back by the outfit myself.  In my opinion the outfit was a little tasteless, no matter the cost, for even Rihanna. The singer has the body for the outfit but it would have looked more classy with a nude underlining. But as always The Navy has given her complete praise on her outfit. Is this what we want our young girls to look up to and copy? It is not. But Rihanna herself has said that even though she is a superstar she is not a role model. So if you are looking for her to tone down her image it’s more than likely not going to happen. She is going to stay the same provocative Rihanna that she has molded herself into.

REMEMBER: JUST BECAUSE IT LOOKS GOOD ON HER 9/10 ITS NOT GOING TO LOOK ON YOU!!

Dressing Like Mommy: Little Fashionistas/ Mini-Divas

Leather skirt, peplum top, sneaker wedges, gold chain and a leopard cross-body.  Sounds cute right?  Lets not forget the fresh manicure and you can not leave the house without lip gloss.  This is how most of us would walk out of the house .  But is this how you would dress your little girl?

Instagram is filled with pages featuring pictures of  little girls dressed like this. Most pictures of these  proclaimed little fashionistas/divas are captioned “dressed liked mommy/ looking like mommy” and they are under the age of 10. Then there are pictures of these little girls with their moms in the exact same outfits.

I personally am not a mother but I am auntie and  the preceding outfit for my niece would have been: A tutu, t-shirt with a cute saying, girly sneakers, a colorful necklace, a doggy purse and some chapstick. Completely different from how some mothers are dressing their daughters. I remember dressing like my mom when I was younger but it would be a jogging suit not something she would wear on a daily basis.  My hair was in braids with beads or ponytails not in a bun or pressed out in a wrap.

What message are we sending  our daughters dressing them how we dress ?  Are we letting them grow up too fast?

My answer is we are sending the message that image is everything and yes we are encouraging them to grow up too fast. As a child I wanted to play dress up in mommy clothes because I knew that the were “grown people” outfits.  I worried about not being able to go outside to play,  not if  my favorite shirt went with my leopard leggings. To these little girls dressed liked mommy I am pretty sure that  the way they are dressed is very important to them. Most girls worry about their image once they hit high school not when there are barely out of diapers. Yes we want our daughters to be dressed adorably but their outfits should be age appropriate.

Everything that we as young women wear is not appropriate for the younger girls in our lives. We should be teaching our little girls the importance of education and to have fun. Teaching them how to be a fashionista should at least wait until they are entering high school.  As they grow up the outfits like ours will no longer look cute on them, it will make them look older than what they are.  That alone opens up doors to a complete different ball game.

But why are these things such as wedge boots and leather skirts are even being made in young girl sizes? We should be dressing our young girls to look cute and girly not young and sassy.
