I Am not my Hair

My late Aunt Rose used to always tell me, “Girl you don’t know what you want to do with your hair!”. An old coworker once asked, “Does your bf feel like he has a different girlfriend every time you come home with a new hairstyle?” Another coworker commented, “I wish I was a black girl, y’all can change your hair in all different type of ways.”

From the comments above you can assume that yes I change my hair all the time!! But why? The simple answer is because I can. I often wonder why some women wear their hair the same way all the time. Why be the same Plain Jane and look the same way everyday out of the year?

I have had styles with and without weave and all type of braids. I have worn almost every hairstyle that you can think of. It is like being a little girl and playing dress up. I have loved some styles and kept my hair that way for months.  I have had styles that I did not like and changed them within a week. I have styles that I absolutely love and go back to all the time. Yes changing my hair can be quite expensive but I am working girl and that money will be made right back.  So the most common questions I receive are: Why do you always wear weave? Why don’t you wear your regular hair its cute? Are you bald head?

Let’s tackle the questions about my real hair first. November 2011 I chopped off my real hair. I wanted a different look. So I built up the courage to get rid of it. No my hair was not down my back before the original chop it was ear length. So I get a lot of people who say,” Oh now that your bald head, that is why you weave.” My response to this is no, my hair thick and quite soft, it is not thin is brutal so no I am not bald head!! I just chose to wear my regular hair short because I love it that way and I want to keep it that way.

So why weave? Most people assume that because you wear weave that you do not have any hair. This is untrue, I know people who wear weave and their real hair is almost as long as the weave that they wear. What people do not understand sometimes weave is used  to help protect your natural hair. When your hair is in weave, it is away from chemicals and heat the you may constantly put in your that may cause it to become damaged. Weave is also easier to manage than your natural hair sometimes. For 9 months I worked 2 jobs, it became difficult to make a hair appointment with my schedule  for my real hair. A weave made it easier for me to deal with my hair. For those girls who workout a lot, they don’t have to worry about sweating out their real hair and it being extremely puffy after their workout with a weave.  Some styles are the ultimate get up and just leave out styles that work well for the busy women. So when you see a woman with weave don’t automatically assume that she has no hair because 9/10 she does. FYI: Black women are not the only ones that wear weaves, white women and other ethnic background do also!

No matter how I wear my hair I am ultimately the same girl. My hair does not define who I am but it just gives me a different for a look for a while. I encourage all women to try something different with your hair. Remember it is just hair! Try a cut it if you don’t like it you hair will grow back.  Add some color and if you don’t like it you can always dye it back to what is was before. Get a weave and if you don’t like  you can always take it out. Don’t be the same Plain Jane 365 days a week, try a different hairstyle, you might fall in love with it! ❤

My different hairstyles within the past month! And yes it is completely different this week!

Closet Must Haves: Blazer

Lately I have read ” The One Hundred by Nina Garcia”. For those of you that do not know Nina she is a Colombian fashion journalist and critic. She is also the host of the TV show “Project Runway” and has held the position of  Fashion Director at Elle and Marie Claire magazines.   The book focuses on 100 items that Nina feels should be in every women’s closet. Some items on her list are ridiculously odd, i.e. A Striped Sailor’s Suit. After going through my own closet I decided to do my own series of Must Haves that I think should be in every women’s closet. First Up….The Blazer

Blazer were originally made for our male counterparts but in fashion most things that are theirs become ours. You can rock a blazer for a nice relaxed day or for a sexy night out on the town. You can wear them with anything from jeans to a dress . I personally like the blazer because it is a more stylish alternative than a regular jacket. Traditionally male blazers have buttons but female designers have made them for women with buttons, without buttons and with zippers. Paired right a blazer can make any outfit pop!

I have 2 favorite blazer that I absolutely love! A blue blazer  with white piping that i purchased from Wet Seal about 2 1/2 years ago and a black blazer that I purchased from Rue21. I did have a gray blazer about 3 years that I misplaced while moving that I loved also! Now lets take a look at some Blazer looks..

Here is my own favorite personal looks with Blazers on (you can’t really see my shoes in the last pic but they were light brown cow-girl boots 😉 )

No matter what is in your closet you can give it a different look with a nice blazer. If you don’t already own a blazer I am almost for certain that you can find a cute blazer at your favorite retail location. No matter how you rock your blazer make sure you rock it in your own personal style.
